Massage... helping people & horses
I love my job!! In 2005, I started helping horses with massage
and was instantly hooked. Working on horses made me really
believe in the change massage produces. After all, horses
have no idea what a massage is supposed to feel like, but
every single time they react by leaning into my touch, falling
asleep, etc. Owners immediately tell me how their horse's
demeanor had changed or how they can already see a
difference in how their horse holds himself. Once I realized
this massage thing is really all it's cracked up to be, I knew I
wanted to help people, too.
I really enjoy being able to help people (and horses!) in such
a non-invasive way. Most drugs have a long list of
side-effects, but my massage only has one: sleepiness.
There are a lot of reasons... chiefly, you've spent your whole life contracting your muscles:
via activity, holding yourself upright (posture), holding stress, or compensating for injury --
how long have you spent stretching your muscles back out?
Working in the garden, playing a game of baseball, or starting up a new workout regime may leave your
muscles feeling stiff and sore. Massage helps to relax the muscles and relieve pain by, essentially,
wringing out the muscle tissue so that fluids are squeezed out of muscle fiber and replaced by new,
fresh blood. Massage also increases circulation, which helps your body repair itself faster to recover
from overuse or injury.
Stress isn't good for your mind, your body, or the people around you that it affects. I don't know
anything as effective as massage to calm the mind and refresh the spirit - in only an hour! My clients tell
me that they can still feel the effects of my massage for about 3 days after the massage!
During pregnancy, a woman's entire pelvis shifts position, altering the length of all of the muscles
attached to the pelvis. This change results in a bunch of sore muscles, especially the lower back.
Massage helps muscles to stretch out and relax, while your body produces more hormones like
endorphins (painkiller) and oxytocin (uplifting), while lowering the body's levels of stress hormones like
cortisol and adrenaline. When you get massage on a regular basis (at least monthly), your body
produces a higher level of these hormones on its own, between your massages. People report feeling
less stress, anxiety, soreness, and depression.
Clinical studies at the University of Miami's Touch Research Institute have proven massage therapy to
improve immune function, reduce stress hormones, reduce pain, alleviate depressive symptoms,
enhance attentiveness, and facilitate weight gain in preterm infants. For more information, scroll down.

Why Horses Get Massage Therapy Better than Bute -- no side-effects! - increases joint fluid w/pain relief Eases stress - travelling, long trailering, event/crowd nervousness Frequently lame horses - improves circulation, relieves pain Warm-up & Cool-down for high level eventers - less recovery time, lactic acid is flushed out, endorphins relieve pain Increases range of motion for dressage - improves fluidity of movement Lesson horses - backs gets the brunt of different riders' skill levels To combat EPM - increased circulation helps increase muscle tone
